Information for international students



 Yakutsk State University (Sakha State University) was established on August 6, 1956 on the basis of the Yakutsk Teachers' Training Institute. Opening of the first University in Yakutia was a significant historic event in the life of the Republic. The University takes its name fr om Maksim K. Ammosov, a well-known Yakut politician and statesman, the founder of the Yakut Autonomous Republic.

Yakutsk State University is one of the leading higher education institutions in the North-East Siberia. The University offers a wide range of programs and diplomas to postgraduate and professional qualifications and beyond.

The total number of students is about 20000 including part-time students. Yakutsk State University is a scientific, educational and cultural complex which is based on three main campuses; one in Yakutsk, the capital of the Sakha Republic, and two others in Neryungry and Mirny, south and west Yakutia.

The main campus of the university is located in Yakutsk. Schools and academic departments of the main University campus are located in 7 buildings.

Students live in 8 halls of residence. There is a Cultural Centre at the University (900 seats) wh ere different student festivals, concerts and contests take place.

Sports Complex is comprised of several gyms, a swimming pool, a stadium and offers grounds for basketball, volleyball, aerobics, gymnastics, wrestling, weight lifting and fitness classes, etc.

Collection of the Archeology and Ethnography Museum at university contains exhibits reflecting history of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

Yakutsk State University is composed of 19 Institutes and faculties. Yakutsk State University has cooperative relations with Universities in the USA, Canada, Germany, France, Poland, Japan, Korea and others.

Office of International Programs at Yakutsk State University coordinates different international projects, exchange programs, foreign specialists’ visits, and scientific internships for international students and other related activities. Every year Yakutsk University offers courses on:

-         Russian Language and Literature

-         Ethnography

-         Culture, History and Literature of Indigenous peoples of the North

-         Yakut language and literature

-         Applied Arts of the peoples of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)

-         Ecology

-         Political Science

-         Geology and other disciplines for foreigners during Fall/Spring Semesters.

During summer time Yakutsk University runs Intensive Russian Language Program for International students which is called “Summer in Siberia”. The “Summer in Siberia” Russian language course is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the multicultural society of Yakutia in the North East Siberia for nine weeks.

The academic year at YSU starts in September and ends in June (01.09-30.06.). All the courses are given in Russian except individual program organized by the Office of International Programs. The applicants from partner – universities are enrolled according to the negotiations between the universities. The applicants from non-partner institutions are enrolled on a paying basis.

To get the letter of invitation please send (by mail, fax or e-mail) to the Office of International programs the following documents:

- the application form; or the application form2

- the photocopy of the first two pages of your passport.

On consideration of your documents you will be sent the letter of invitation. Please find out the details of getting the visa in the Russian Embassy in your country. It takes about 2 months to get the letter of invitation that is why you are recommended to send all the documents not later than 3 months before the beginning of the term.
