"Sakha-Yakutia: Living Culture in Permafrost area"

 



Yakutia is a huge territory. Almost all diamonds, all antimony and the one fourth part of gold of Russia are extracted here. Here are the greatest stocks of ore and tin in Russia and there are good prospects for extraction of new oil fields and gas. Features of permafrost attract the increasing attention of researchers and students. The permafrost influences on a whole life of republic, on mentality and culture of the people living here. The Yakut language and ethnic culture are interesting not only for scientists, but also for all people who are opened for dialogue of cultures and inclusion to mankind values.

Target group: Students of the Universities in Germany, whose major is anthropology, ethnography, languages and culture, history and other humanities.

Requirements: Knowledge of Russian language is not necessary. All activities are offered in English, some of them-in German.

Quantity of participants: 15 - minimum, 25- maximum

Accommodation: Student hostel at the North-Eastern Federal University campus. Students will share a room with other summer school student.

Fee: € 850 (including classes with field trips and live in Amga village, tours and cultural activities)

Program description

“Sakha-Yakutia – Living culture in permafrost area” is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in multicultural society of Yakutia in the North-Eastern Siberia. Witness the historic, social, economic and cultural changes which occur in Yakutia at present.

In the framework of the Summer school we offer classes on two main topics:

- Culture and spiritual life of the Sakha people (history, culture, ethnography, Yakut and Russian languages).

- Treasure of Permafrost (geology, geography, flora and fauna, ecology, outdoor excursion).

A 3 –week program includes lectures, workshops on history, culture, environment and people of Yakutia, Elementary Intensive Russian, Intermediate Russian, Elementary Sakha Language. The topics include ethnography of indigenous people of Yakutia, religious outlook, ethnogenesis, Yakut mythology and folklore, shamanism.

The participants will also gain knowledge on geology, relief, climate, flora and fauna, waters. The program includes field trips, visits to museums of Yakutsk, an open-air museum “Friendship”, ethnographic centers “Chochur-Muran”, “Ytyk Haya”. The students will also be able to live three days in a rural area – a typical Sakha village and to travel to the Lena Cliffs, Yakutia most famous tourist sight.
